Founded in 1995, the non-profit AIDS Vaccine Advocacy Coalition (AVAC) seeks to create a favorable policy and social environment for accelerated ethical research and eventual global delivery of AIDS vaccines as part of a comprehensive response to the pandemic. This work is guided by the following principles:
- Translate complex scientific ideas to communities AND translate community needs and perceptions to the scientific community.
- Manage expectations.
- Hold agencies accountable for accelerating ethical research and development.
- Expand international partnerships to ensure local relevance and a global movement.
- Ensure that policy and advocacy are based on thorough research and evidence.
- Build coalitions, working groups and think tanks for specific issues.
- Develop and widely disseminate high-quality, user-friendly materials.
AVAC currently focuses in four priority areas:
- Develop and advocate for policy options to facilitate the expeditious and ethical development, introduction and use of AIDS vaccines and other new prevention technologies.
- Ensure that rights and interests of trial participants, eventual users and communities are fully represented and respected in the scientific, product development, clinical trial and access processes.
- Monitor the AIDS vaccine field and mobilize political, financial and community support for AIDS vaccine research as part of a comprehensive response.
- Build an informed, action-oriented global coalition of civil society and community-based organizations exchanging information and experiences.

AVAC is dedicated to accelerating the ethical development and global delivery of vaccines for AIDS. AVAC does not accept funding from government or the pharmaceutical industry. AVAC's continuous policy, advocacy, and outreach work is made possible by the dedicated labor of AVAC advocates, support from our members and these organizations:
Broadway Cares/Equity Fights AIDS (BC/EFA) - BC/EFA is the nation's leading industry-based, not-for-profit AIDS fundraising and grant making organization. BC/EFA is the on-going, committed response from the American Theatre community to an urgent worldwide health crisis. By drawing upon the talents, resources, and generosity of this community, BC/EFA raises funds for AIDS-related causes across the United States.
The Ford Foundation - The Ford Foundation is an independent nonprofit grant-making organization that makes grants in all 50 U.S. states and in many countries around the world. The Global HIV Vaccine Enterprise - The Enterprise is an alliance of independent organizations around the world dedicated to accelerating the development of a preventive HIV vaccine by:
- Shared scientific plan: Implementing a strategic plan for HIV vaccine research that spans vaccine discovery, product development and manufacturing, and clinical trials
- Increased resources: Mobilizing significant new funding to achieve the scientific plan
- Greater collaboration: Promoting more efficient, faster ways for researchers to share successes and failures and avoid duplication of efforts
International AIDS Vaccine Initiative (IAVI) - IAVI is a global not-for-profit organization whose mission is to ensure the development of safe, effective, accessible, preventive HIV vaccines for use throughout the world.
International Partnership for Microbicides (IPM) - IPM is a non-profit product development partnership (PDP) established in 2002 to prevent HIV transmission by accelerating the development and availability of a safe and effective microbicide for use by women in developing countries.
