Pontiano Kaleebu,
Pontiano holds a Medical degree from Makerere University Medical School, Kampala, a Diploma in Immunology and a PhD from London University. He is currently the Assistant Director of the Uganda Virus Research Institute, and the Director of the HIV Vaccine Unit there supported by IAVI. He is also the Head of the Basic Sciences Programme of the Medical Research Council/UVRI Research Unit on AIDS in Uganda. He is the Chairman of the African AIDS Vaccine Programme, a member of the Science committee of the HIV Vaccine Enterprise and a Visiting Reader of Imperial College London. He has received many awards including the Third World Academy of Science (TWAS) and Uganda National Council for Science and technology award of Young Scientist year award 1999. He has published widely with more than 60 publications and a book chapter on Immune responses to infection in the "Principles of Medicine in Africa, 3rd Edition". He was also a co-Principal Investigator for the first HIV vaccine trial in Africa.
