April 13, 2011 Dear Advocates, AVAC is happy to announce the publication of Progress in Cervical Cancer Prevention: The CCA Report Card by the global coalition Cervical Cancer Action (CCA), of which AVAC is a founding member. The Report Card, launched today at the 44th Session of the United Nations Commission on Population and Development, assesses global readiness in low- and middle-income countries to fight cervical cancer using new innovations including human papillomavirus (HPV) vaccines and screening technologies, especially in regions where the disease is a common killer. The Report Card underscores the hurdles that remain to introducing new and effective technologies in communities where they are needed most. Many countries with high cervical cancer disease burdens lack national cancer control plans, cancer registries, sufficient resources and/or political will. Given that adolescent girls are a key target population for both HPV vaccine and a potential AIDS vaccine, it is critical to track and learn from HPV vaccine introduction efforts. Stay tuned for an announcement of a CCA-AVAC
webinar on cervical cancer prevention and
treatment advocacy that will feature a panel
discussion on strategies for putting the
Report’s recommendations into action and
identify key advocacy activities to ensure that
cervical cancer prevention and treatment are
prioritized at the September 2011 United
Nations General Assembly Special Session on
Non-communicable Diseases. This "UNGASS"
format has led to critical declarations on
HIV/AIDS. The UNGASS on Non-communicable
Diseases will include civil society listening
sessions and provide opportunity for strategic
advocacy. Progress in Cervical Cancer Prevention: The CCA Report Card is available for download at www.avac.org/hpv. To order hard copies and find out more about Cervical Cancer Action, visit www.cervicalcanceraction.org. Best, |
