AVAC is a not-for-profit organization and is exempt from federal income tax under section 501(c)(3) of the US Internal Revenue Code. AVAC's continuous policy, advocacy and outreach work is made possible by the generous support of its members and donors. AVAC does not accept funding from the pharmaceutical industry.
 
In 2012, AVAC's budget was $4.3 million, of which 84% was devoted to programs, 10% to administration and 6% to fundraising. Put another way, 84 cents of every dollar donated to AVAC was dedicated to AVAC's policy, advocacy, communications, education and outreach work.
