Join a Community Advisory Board (CAB)
There is a Community Advisory Board (CAB), or
similar community advisory mechanism, at each
HIV prevention research trial site, as they
make important contributions to the design and
conduct of trials. A CAB is a committee
composed of community members who provide input
at every step of the research. CABs work to
ensure that the concerns and issues of
communities are addressed and that a
partnership between researchers and communities
is fostered. CABs are a mechanism to ensure
community input to contribute to the design and
implementation of trials. They are made up of a
range of community members (e.g. people living
with HIV/AIDS, service providers, advocates,
community leaders) who provide recommendations
regarding the conduct of clinical research in
their community. You do not need any special
skills to join and the CAB will help you learn
more about the HIV prevention research that is
taking place in your area.
