AVAC Progams

AVAC provides materials and information, implements collaborative projects, and does targeted advocacy around biomedical HIV prevention research. Below are examples of this work with communities:

Good Participatory Practice Initiative
In November 2007, UNAIDS and AVAC published a set of guidelines called "Good Participatory Practice (GPP) Guidelines for Biomedical HIV Prevention Trials," which outlines a systematic way for trial sites to work in a collaborative fashion with local communities where trials are being implemented. AVAC is raising awareness about the GPP guidelines, assist trial sites and communities to begin using them, and encouraging the adoption of systematic ways for trials sites conducting biomedical HIV prevention research to collaborate with local communities in positive ways worldwide.

AVAC HIV Prevention Research Advocacy Fellowships
Launched in 2009, the HIV Prevention Research Advocacy Fellowship program provides support to emerging and mid-career advocates to implement projects related to biomedical HIV prevention research activities in their countries and communities.

Women's HIV Prevention Tracking Project (WHiPT)
WHiPT, a collaborative effort between AVAC and the ATHENA Network, supports women's community-based efforts to monitor, evaluate and develop, or expand advocacy around new and emerging HIV prevention strategies. WHiPT provides support for community-based teams working on specific issues within a local or national context. There are currently three WHiPT teams in southern Africa receiving support for pilot projects tracking the implications for women of the introduction of male circumcision for HIV prevention.

pxROAR (Research, Outreach, Advocacy and Representation)

The pxROAR program embraces a two-fold mission: educating its members in HIV prevention research science and advocacy and providing a domestic platform for specific prevention research advocacy campaigns. pxROAR is comprised of a select group of US-based prevention research advocates who represent a range of communities, including some of those that are highly effected by the AIDS epidemic.

AVAC regularly convenes meetings, seminars, trainings, and conference calls to discuss specific topics that are relevant to the promotion of the ethical implementation of scientifically valid biomedical HIV prevention research trials

AVAC provides information on HIV prevention research in a number of formats, including website content, written publications, and updates via email through our Advocates' Network. We hope that these resources are useful in educating communities about research and ways to get involved.

Visit our Download Center for specific publications, fact sheets, and other helpful resources.

Join the Advocates' Network for periodic email updates and analyses on biomedical HIV prevention research.
