AVAC 2011 Advocacy Partners' Forum - Advocacy for a Prevention Revolution

Background

The 2011 AVAC Advocacy Partners’ Forum took place from 21-24 June 2011 in Nairobi, Kenya.

It brought together individuals and partners who are involved in prevention research advocacy and related activities worldwide, with a particular focus on AVAC program partners (e.g., HIV Prevention Research Advocacy Fellowships, Women's HIV Prevention Tracking Project (WHiPT), Good Participatory Practice Initiative and National Stakeholder engagement), collaborators and allies in Africa. The goal of the meeting was to share AVAC experiences, develop a common understanding across programs and prevention interventions, prepare for trial results expected in 2012-2013, develop priorities and strategies for key emerging issues and build the individual capacity of all participants.

The theme for the second annual forum was “Advocacy for a Prevention Revolution". The Forum created a platform for considering how to advocate for and shape the processes around prevention research and implementation; discussions on how to advocate for prevention programmes that are evidence-based; deliberations on how we affect national processes to take ARV treatment to scale to maximize both its treatment and prevention benefits; and conversations on how to be stronger advocates for moving positive trial results rapidly forward to implementation.

Forum Objectives

  • Connect advocates actively working in, partnering with or supporting AVAC prevention research advocacy activities
  • Strengthen capacity around HIV prevention research advocacy
  • Prepare advocacy strategies for informing access to new prevention strategies and anticipating results of trials
  • Highlight the Partners’ skills and expertise to help develop a collective resource-base
