About HVAD and AVAC's 2007 commemoration

Each year on May 18th, people around the world commemorate HIV Vaccine Awareness Day, an observance to recognize and thank the thousands of volunteers, community members, health professionals, researchers and scientists who are working together to find a safe and effective HIV vaccine. It is also a day to educate our communities about the importance of HIV vaccine research and development.

HIV Vaccine Awareness Day marks the day in 1997 when US President Bill Clinton made a speech in which he called for an AIDS vaccine in ten years' time. You can also download the full text of Clinton's speech here.

This year marks the ten-year anniversary of Clinton's speech. And, while we still haven't found a vaccine, there has been much progress and the reasons why we need one are as clear as they have ever been. To commemorate this year's HVAD, AVAC is publishing "The Countdown Continues" which revisits Clinton's historic speech and finds its words as timely as ever.

It reflects on five quotes from the original speech, and includes a set of graphics looking at how numbers of trial volunteers, international sites, and trials have changed over the past ten years and have charted important progress towards a safe, effective and accessible vaccine. This publication is now available for downloading, click here to download "The Countdown Continues".

"The Countdown Continues" also includes a summary timeline of key milestones in AIDS vaccines, HIV prevention and the global epidemic. For a more detailed timeline, click here

We hope you will find this a useful tool for raising awareness of AIDS vaccines on May 18th and throughout the year. If you would like printed copies of the report, please email avac@avac.org with your contact information and the number of copies you would like.
