  • HIV Vaccine Awareness Day: On the road to an AIDS Vaccine

    Each year on May 18th, HIV Vaccine Awareness Day (HVAD), we recognize and thank the thousands of volunteers, community members, health professionals, advocates, policy makers and scientists who are working together to find a safe and effective AIDS vaccine. HVAD is a reminder that vaccine research is rarely linear, often unpredictable and always an essential component of a comprehensive response to the epidemic. It is also often a reminder that awareness of the next steps for vaccine development is limited, and HVAD is an annual opportunity to raise awareness.

  • Africans on the Front Lines of VMMC Advocacy

    Over the past few years, the pace of scale-up of voluntary medical male circumcision for HIV prevention has finally begun to acclerate around Africa. Many different stakeholders have worked to make this happen—service providers, community educators, wives and mothers, and the millions of men who have stepped up to undergo this simple procedure, which reduces the risk of HIV infection by roughly 70 percent, for life.

  • Good morning, here’s what keeps me up at night...

  • Science Café in Nairobi

    In July, AVAC and Internews in Kenya organized a journalists briefing on PrePex, a non-surgical device for voluntary medical male circumcision (VMMC) pre-qualified by the World Health Organization (WHO). (Click here for more on this process.) This was the first in a planned series of journalist “cafés” designed to spark conversation about VMMC and the role of non-surgical devices.
