HPV Vaccine Rates Are Low Because People Still Don't Understand Its Cancer Risks

For over a decade, there has been a vaccine to prevent the types of human papillomavirus (HPV) that are most likely to cause cervical and other types of cancers -- and yet, vaccine rates lag far behind the Healthy People 2020 goal of 80 percent among 13 to 15 year olds. In 2017, just 49 percent of eligible young people had been adequately vaccinated. This is particularly alarming given new research that suggests vaccines could prevent 92 percent of all cancers caused by HPV.
