Charles Brown

Infectious Diseases Institute - Makerere University (IDI) - 2014 Fellow

Charles has a BA in Social Work and a Master’s Degree in Public Administration and Management from Makerere University. He has been working in HIV clinical trials for seven years in the HSV2/ HIV study, Partners PrEP study and most recently Partners Demonstration Project. His focus has been on HIV counselling and testing, adherence support and community education for serodiscordant couples, gay men and other men who have sex with men, and sex workers.

Fellowship Focus: Charles advocated for rollout of pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) for high-risk groups including sex workers, men who have sex with men and serodiscordant couples. He laid the groundwork for the development of guidelines for PrEP roll out in Uganda. He has mapped out progress to-date and obstacles that remain in making PrEP available and focused on documenting demand for PrEP, made the case for development of PrEP guidelines to relevant government agencies and raised awareness of and interest in PrEP.
