Josephine Aseme

Heartland Alliance International

Josephine Aseme is the founder of Greater Women Initiative for Health and Rights, a sex worker-led community organization. She also serves as the board vice-chairperson for the Nigeria Sex Workers Association and is a member of the National Key Population Secretariat.

As a Fellow, Josephine is working to accelerate the scale-up of PrEP to key populations across Nigeria, where rollout has been slow. She will target the National Agency for the Control of AIDS to advocate for PrEP inclusion in Nigeria’s next Minimum Prevention Package Intervention. She’ll also work with key populations to create demand for PrEP while advocating with the Ministry of Health, Global Fund and PEPFAR to guarantee its provision is free. Josephine will work in coalition to ensure service providers are sensitized to provide culturally competent care to key populations through the development of job aids and, lastly, she’ll work with media for accurate and consistent coverage of PrEP and other HIV prevention interventions.

In Their Own Words
I strive to center sex workers in my advocacy because I recognize that key populations face unique challenges, cultural prejudices and discriminatory laws that limit their access to comprehensive HIV services.
