Josephine Aseme

Heartland Alliance International

Josephine Aseme is a sex worker, activist and young leader with a passion for advocating for women’s rights and health. Josephine has extensive experience working with sex workers and serves as the board vice-chairperson for the Nigeria Sex Workers Association and as a member of the National Key Population Secretariat. Josephine also implements adult literacy programs for sex workers through her leadership in the “Greater Women Initiative for Health and Rights”, a sex worker-led community organization.

Why I want to work on HIV prevention Advocacy in 2020

I strive to center sex workers in my advocacy because I recognize that key populations face unique challenges, cultural prejudice and discriminatory laws that limit their access to comprehensive HIV services. I believe knowledge is power and am committed to promoting proven prevention tools and strategies throughout Nigeria in order to achieve zero new infections among key and vulnerable populations.
